T.H.E. Show (Newport Beach) 2012 Coverage

The Sonorus Audio Room

One of the highlights of the show was the Sonorus Audio room with its huge electrostatics. The system, comprised of the preamplifier, four OTL amplifiers, and electrostatic panels runs around $100,000. The two DefTech BP20 towers shown on either side are not being used as subwoofers, but as “back flow compensation woofers” - in essence, a form of low-frequency room/speaker compensation.

The Sonorus VPA 11 line stage and headphone preamplifier is available separately for $4995.

One of two pairs of a ESl06 200 watt OTL tube amp for the electrostatics and a OTL09 OTL tube amp for the dynamic speakers.

A Luxman DU-50 universal player ($4990) graced the bottom shelf, but was not in use when I was in the room.

The jewel in the room, however, was the Sonorus ATR10 reel-to-reel tape playback deck ($12,000). It is hand-built from the ground up, using only the motors and head block from a donor Studer machine. Forget the Studer A810; this is the one to have.
